Who here loves the Secret Garden story? Raise your hand if you are among the millennials who grew up with the lovely movie from the '90s then I hear you loud and clear.
“One of the strange things about living in the world is that it is only now and then one is quite sure one is going to live forever and ever and ever. One knows it sometimes when one gets up at the tender solemn dawn-time and goes out and stands out and throws one's head far back and looks up and up and watches the pale sky slowly changing and flushing and marvelous unknown things happening until the East almost makes one cry out and one's heart stands still at the strange unchanging majesty of the rising of the sun--which has been happening every morning for thousands and thousands and thousands of years. One knows it then for a moment or so. And one knows it sometimes when one stands by oneself in a wood at sunset and the mysterious deep gold stillness slanting through and under the branches seems to be saying slowly again and again something one cannot quite hear, however much one tries. Then sometimes the immense quiet of the dark blue at night with the millions of stars waiting and watching makes one sure; and sometimes a sound of far-off music makes it true; and sometimes a look in someone's eyes.”
― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
To have a secret garden right outside your house is a dream to be borne into reality. And so I've gathered some of my inspirational pictures to nudge me into making my backyard the kind of secret garden I want it to be.
THE PLAN: Make it wild, make it blend with my cottage house and all greeneries in my property.
1. Create a flower color palette
This beautiful house has a lovely corner tucked with matching palette and surprise color. The layering also helped with creating a visual art. From tall (closest to the siding) to medium (middle) to small. And even if it looks busy, it has a wild cottage feel to it.
2. Accent piece
Incorporate an accent piece to your secret garden such an iron-wrought gate. A special thing for your clandestine needs and it adds appeal and quality to your secret garden.
3. Dress those windows
For our window box, I am leaning into these for inspo purposes:
A classic way to dress up those bland windows is to fill it with luscious leaves and florals. For my cottage, I have a plan to do just that. If a window box can't be done, raised garden beds against the window also work gorgeous.
4. Embrace the wild
One of the key things I am reminding myself of is to embrace some of the natural growth that is happening around my cottage. Aside from weed, welcome those that grow already because they do appeal so much especially in a cottage. I'm not aiming for a manicured, OCD perfected garden but more of the side of wild chic with some modern elements.
